Derrick first started out in motorsport in the late 1970's racing in grass track, destruction derby's, road rally's, auto cross (basically anything with four wheels and an engine). He then proceeded into rallying where his talent lay, he eventually won the British Open Rally Championship in 1983 driving a Talbot Sunbeam, competing against the likes of Jimmy McRae. Unfortunately at the end of 1983 Talbot was bought by Peugeot, therefore lost his drive.
Derrick's youngest son Paul started racing karts and due to that, he started H.T. Racing (HTR Racing Team) to help drivers live their dreams of racing and winning in karting, helping them progress into all other kinds of motorsport.
